What’s Fitness About?
Is is about diet, nutrition, exercise or something else?
Depending on the context you choose, there are a number of definitions or interpretations for the word fitness. In biology, fitness refers to an individual’s ability to reproduce; in bodybuilding its the aesthetic qualities or attractiveness of the competitors physique.
As you browse this website, you’ll soon see that we’ve adopted a broader concept to fitness, one that can be defined as:
The ability to successfully meet the demands of one’s lifestyle
However, it really is a bit of a “chicken and egg” dilemma. To be fit enough to successfully meet the demands of your lifestyle, you need to have a healthy and balanced lifestyle so that you can become fit - and stay fit.
The Lifestyle for Fitness Ring below focuses on three areas of that lifestyle; physical fitness, diet and nutrition and brain fitness.

Adopting a Lifestyle for Fitness means focusing on your physical fitness, your diet and nutrition, and your brain fitness
Although the graphic shows these areas as being separate and distinct, they are actually very much interrelated. After all, you can’t be truly physically fit if you’re not supplying your body with a balanced nutritious diet.
Similarly, no matter how well you eat, if you aren’t maintaining the health related components of your physical fitness, you won’t be able to truly meet all of your lifestyle’s demands.
Your brain is dependent on the blood flow and oxygen fed to it from the rest of your body. That’ll keep the engine running, but the diet you chose and the nutrition you provide your brain can reduce the risk of age-related diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. These all affect your ability to meet the demands of your lifestyle.
As you can see, it is the three (3) areas in the fitness ring above that most directly affect our overall health, our personal fitness levels and our quality of life.
Whether your personal goals are to develop a healthy diet, lose weight, begin or improve an exercise routine, adopt a healthy living lifestyle for yourself or you want to raise healthy kids, any change you make to one of these three key areas (however small), means you are taking action to improve your Lifestyle for Fitness.
